Election Night Live - Students watch the US Election

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sleep over at your school in order to watch the American election in the middle of the night?

Because that is what we did on the night of November 5th to November 6th. The whole evening was overseen and organized by our teachers, Anil Kocak, Jörg Klose and Kendra Kobs. 16 students from the English courses of the EF participated in this engaging and cozy evening and night, which took place in the Auszeit.

The evening started out with two presentations, one of which was about the tragic event of 9/11 in 2001. After that, two students held a presentation on the Capitol Riot, which showcased what happened on the day of January 6th in 2021 very well. This was followed by a small discussion on whether Trump should have been held accountable for indirectly being the cause of the riot, in which the stances stood on opposite sides. Afterwards we got to enjoy some delicious, selfmade stone oven Pizzas. Each student could individually put their chosen toppings on their pizza. A thanks goes out to two tenth graders, who helped Jörg Klose in preparing the dough. Once we had all eaten, we had a really great presentation on the election system by one of our classmates. The last presentation of the day was presented by two students about Donald Trump and Kamala Harris themselves. They made it really informative and sprinkled in some small, humorous moments which grabbed our attention. To honor the topic and main event of the day, we had a small discussion on who our students would vote for, in which 9 students would vote for Kamala Harris and 1 student would vote for Donald Trump.

Towards the end, we all got a portion of very delicious Tiramisu, which was kindly organized by Jörg Klose. To finish the day off, we all watched the election live together (Some even stayed up until 4AM!), before we went to bed in the classrooms of our tenth graders.

In the morning we actually had a well-organized breakfast in the Auszeit, and what did we have to watch?! It was Trump’s victory speech live on TV! But hey, that’s democracy!

A thanks goes out to our English teacher Anil Kocak, who came up with the whole idea and who was involved in most of the planning and organizing. As well as that, appreciation goes out to Jörg Klose for organizing the pizza, the oven and the Tiramisu and of course a thanks goes out to Kendra Kobs for joining us as well. Also we want to thank the Förderverein for its financial support. Moreover, we want to thank Mrs Wittler and Mr Koschinski who supported the whole idea.

All in all, it was a great experience we will not forget about.

See you at the Super Bowl in school at night???! Who knows? 
